In 1990 the government introduced CBT as a legal requirement. CBT is a course of Compulsory Basic Training which must be completed before
a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride unaccompanied on the road with L-plates. There is no test involved in a CBT course
but you will have to reach a good level of safe competent riding in order to complete the course successfully. The course is a full day of
training and most people reach the required standard in that time, even if they have not ridden a motorcycle before.
PLEASE NOTE: You need to hold either a provisional or full driving licence, and be 16 years old or over.
What does CBT involve? The CBT course involves five elements:
The CBT course usually lasts a full day. It can take longer depending on how quickly you learn.
There are 5 parts to the course:
Introduction and eyesight check
On-Site Training
On-Site Riding
On-Road Training
On-Road Riding
You move from one part to the next when your trainer is happy you’ve:
Learnt the theory
Show practical Skills to a safe basic level
When you complete the course
You’ll get a ‘certificate of completion’ (sometimes called a ‘DL196’) when you successfully complete the course.
You can then ride a moped or motorcycle up to 125cc and with a power output of up to 11kW on the road with L plates (L or D plates in Wales).
You must pass your theory test and full moped or motorcycle test within 2 years otherwise you'll need to complete the CBT again or stop riding
